Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Potatoes
Wash and peel the potatoes if desired. Slice them into thin rounds about 1/4-inch thick. Thin slices help the potatoes become crispy while cooking evenly.
Place the sliced potatoes in a bowl of cold water for about 10 minutes. This removes extra starch and helps create crispier potatoes.
Drain the potatoes and dry them completely using paper towels or a clean kitchen towel. Moisture can prevent proper frying.
Step 2: Slice the Onions
Thinly slice the onions into rings or strips. Mince the garlic cloves and set aside.
Step 3: Season the Potatoes
In a large bowl, toss the potatoes with:
- Salt
- Black pepper
- Paprika
- Garlic powder
- Onion powder
Mix well so every slice is coated with seasoning.
Cooking the Potatoes
Step 4: Heat the Pan
Place a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add vegetable oil and butter.
Once the butter melts and the oil is hot, carefully add the potato slices in a single layer. Do not overcrowd the pan.
Cook in batches if necessary.
Step 5: Fry Until Golden
Cook the potatoes for about 4–5 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy.
Flip carefully using a spatula. The edges should become crispy while the inside stays soft and tender.
Remove the cooked potatoes and place them on a plate lined with paper towels.
Cooking the Onions
Step 6: Caramelize the Onions
In the same pan, add 1 tablespoon butter.
Add the sliced onions and a small pinch of salt. Cook slowly over medium heat for about 10–12 minutes, stirring occasionally.
The onions will become soft, sweet, and lightly caramelized.
Add minced garlic during the final 2 minutes of cooking.
Combine Everything
Step 7: Mix Potatoes and Onions
Return the crispy potatoes to the skillet with the onions.
Gently toss everything together and cook for another 2–3 minutes so the flavors combine perfectly.
Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
