Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2¼ tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ¾ cup warm milk
  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 tbsp fresh dill, chopped
  • ½ cup shredded mozzarella or cheddar

For the Garlic Butter

  • 4 tbsp butter, melted
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp parsley, chopped
  • ½ tsp dried Italian herbs

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: Mix warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Make the dough: Add flour, salt, egg, and melted butter. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead for 7–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1–1½ hours, or until doubled.
  5. Prepare garlic butter: Mix melted butter, garlic, parsley, and Italian herbs.
  6. Punch down the dough and divide it into small pieces.
  7. Flatten each piece, brush with garlic butter, sprinkle with cheese and herbs, then stack the pieces together.
  8. Place the stacked dough pieces into a greased loaf pan. Cover and let rise for another 30–40 minutes.
  9. Brush the top with remaining garlic butter.
  10. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 30–35 minutes, until golden brown.
  11. Let cool for 10 minutes, then brush with a little extra garlic butter and serve warm.

Tip: For an extra cheesy, flavorful loaf, add a little Parmesan along with the mozzarella.
