Ingredients
For the apple filling:
- 6–8 medium apples (about 2.5–3 lbs / 1.2–1.4 kg), peeled, cored, and sliced
(Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix works best) - ½ cup (100 g) granulated sugar
- ¼ cup (50 g) brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (or cornstarch for gluten-free)
- Pinch of salt
For the crumble topping:
- 1 cup (125 g) all-purpose flour
- ½ cup (100 g) brown sugar
- ¼ cup (50 g) granulated sugar
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup (115 g) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
1. Prepare the apples
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Peel, core, and slice the apples into evenly sized pieces (about ¼-inch thick).
- Place them in a large bowl.
2. Make the filling
- Add sugar, brown sugar, lemon juice, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, flour, and salt to the apples.
- Toss everything together until the apples are evenly coated.
- Transfer the mixture into a greased baking dish (9×13-inch or similar).
3. Make the crumble topping
- In a separate bowl, mix flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
- Add the cold butter cubes.
- Use your fingers, a pastry cutter, or a fork to work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture becomes crumbly (pea-sized pieces are ideal).
4. Assemble
- Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apple mixture.
- Make sure the apples are mostly covered, but don’t pack it down.
5. Bake
- Bake for 40–50 minutes, or until:
- The topping is golden brown
- The filling is bubbling around the edges
6. Cool slightly
- Let it rest for 10–15 minutes before serving.
- This helps the filling thicken.
- Serve warm with:
- Whipped cream
- Caramel drizzle
