Ingredients

For the apple filling:

  • 6–8 medium apples (about 2.5–3 lbs / 1.2–1.4 kg), peeled, cored, and sliced
(Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix works best)
  • ½ cup (100 g) granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup (50 g) brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (or cornstarch for gluten-free)
  • Pinch of salt

For the crumble topping:

  • 1 cup (125 g) all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup (100 g) brown sugar
  • ¼ cup (50 g) granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup (115 g) unsalted butter, cold and cubed

🔪 Instructions

1. Prepare the apples

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Peel, core, and slice the apples into evenly sized pieces (about ¼-inch thick).
  3. Place them in a large bowl.

2. Make the filling

  1. Add sugar, brown sugar, lemon juice, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, flour, and salt to the apples.
  2. Toss everything together until the apples are evenly coated.
  3. Transfer the mixture into a greased baking dish (9×13-inch or similar).

3. Make the crumble topping

  1. In a separate bowl, mix flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
  2. Add the cold butter cubes.
  3. Use your fingers, a pastry cutter, or a fork to work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture becomes crumbly (pea-sized pieces are ideal).

4. Assemble

  • Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apple mixture.
  • Make sure the apples are mostly covered, but don’t pack it down.

5. Bake

  • Bake for 40–50 minutes, or until:
    • The topping is golden brown
    • The filling is bubbling around the edges

6. Cool slightly

  • Let it rest for 10–15 minutes before serving.
  • This helps the filling thicken.

💡 Tips for Best Results

  • Use a mix of tart and sweet apples for better flavor depth.
  • If the topping browns too quickly, cover loosely with foil.
  • For extra crunch, add chopped nuts (like walnuts or pecans) to the topping.
  • Want it extra juicy? Add 2–3 tablespoons of apple juice or cider to the filling.
